The metal incorporation reactions of the S-bridged incomplete cubane-type Mo clusters in nonaq. solvent or pure H2O are reported for the 1st time. The reaction of the clusters [Mo3S4(dtp)4(MeCN)] (1) in MeCN and [Mo3S4(Hnta)3]2- in pure H2O with Cd metal gave two novel Mo-Cd mixed-metal clusters [(MeCN)(dtp)4Mo3S4CdS4Mo3(dtp)4(MeCN)] (3) and [(Hnta)3Mo3S4CdS4Mo3(Hnta)3]4- (4), resp. Although the clusters 3 and 4 have sandwich cubane-type Mo3S4CdS4Mo38+ cores of the same type, the peak positions of electronic spectra of 3 (856 nm) and 4 (1235 nm) at the longest wavelength are distinctly different from each other.
