Three photochromic complexes with disulfur and dithiolate ligands [Mo2(m-S2)(m-L)2(L)2] (3a, L = bis(4-methylphenyl)-ethylene-1,2-dithiolate (mpdt); 4a, L = bis(4-methoxylphenyl)-ethylene-1,2-dithiolate (mopdt); 5a, L = dibutyl-ethylene-1,2-dithiolate (budt)) have been synthesized and characterized by UV-visible and NMR (1H and 13C) spectroscopy and X-ray crystallog. On exposure to a halogen lamp light, the colors of the complexes in solns. change very much, and, in the dark, the colors return to the original colors: 3a, purple to green; 4a, blue to green; 5a, red to red (a large spectral change). Relevant mononuclear complexes [MoL3] (3c, L = mpdt; 4c, L = mopdt; 5c, L = budt) and nonphotochromic dinuclear complexes [Mo2(m-S2)2(m-S4)(L)4] (3b, L = mpdt; 4b, L = mopdt; 5b, L = budt) have also been synthesized and characterized.
