[Mo3(μ3-S)(μ-O)(μ-S)2(H2O)9]4+ (I) reacts with In metal in aq. soln. of toluenesulfonic acid to give a novel sandwich cubane-type Mo-In mixed-metal cluster [(H2O)9Mo3S3OInOS3Mo3(H2O)9]8+ (II). II is oxidized in HCl to give I with evolution of H gas. An intermediate is isolated, and is tentatively assigned to Mo3In(μ3-S)(μ-O)(μ-S)2 5+. Reaction pathways are proposed.
