洞ノ口遺跡で出土した中世後半に属する1・2号焼人骨について分析したところ焼骨に膠着した物質が確認され、蛍光 X 線分析による元素組成から植物質燃料から生成したガラスであると推定された。本資料を中心に、周辺で出土した古代・中世の火葬墓・火葬遺構を比較し、洞ノ口遺跡火葬骨については燃焼室と煙突効果を生む通風機構を有する火葬炉が利用されたこと、火葬後に一部が収骨されて墓域に運ばれたことを推定した。
