Summary

Numerous mites were collected from the left and right external auditory canals of a Japanese raccoon dog Nyctereutes viverrinus viverrinus (Carnivora: Canidae) which had died in a traffic accident in Ehime prefecture, Japan, in September, 2024. Developmental stages of the collected mites were adults, protonymphs, tritonymphs, larvae, and eggs. Based on their morphology, the mites were identified as ear mite Otodectes cynotis (Sarcoptiformes: Psoroptidae). Although ear mites infest several species of carnivorous mammals, recorded infestations of a raccoon dog are extremely rare.
