Summary

A stent is a medical device used to open stenosed arteries to secure blood flow. The stent is constructed as a pseudo two-dimensional cellular structure made of a thin-walled tube by connecting a unit cell shape vertically and horizontally. Therefore, the deformation behavior and mechanical characteristics of the stent strongly depend on both the material used and the unit cell shape. In this study, an application of pure titanium to a stent was considered because of its superior biocompatibility. The optimum shape of the unit cell was investigated by means of rhombus-shaped specimens introduced by the authors. It was found that the strain distribution and the deformation limit varied with the unit cell shape, and thus influenced the mechanical characteristics required for the pure titanium stent.
