Summary

By examining the Minutes of the Joint University Council for Social Studies , this article explores the discussion and activities of the Joint University Council in social welfare. The Joint University Council was established in 1818. The Council consisted of representatives from the universities of Birmingham, Bristol, Liverpool, London, and so on. The Council held the meeting several times a year. At the Council, ‘report on principals underlying Social Study’, ‘the Probation Service’, ‘the training of the Health Visitors’, ‘Socia l Study in its relation to university degree cou r ses’, ‘the status of s ocial w orkers ’ were placed on the agenda . The Council co - operated with the professional association, e.g. the Home office, the Associat i on of Health Visitors, the Central Association fo r Mental Welfare. They organised sub - committee or hold a meeting or reported the courses of study. The Council improved in the educational qualifications of the training for professional positions connected with the social services.
