Magnetic behavior observed in a metal complex can be explained easily by a size of the ligand field splitting of its central metal ion. Therefore, such a magnetic property of the metal complex can be controlled freely if we could control the size of the ligand field splitting freely. There is a possibility to obtain a novel material efficiently having a spin cross-over (SCO) phenomenon, which can be changed its spin state reversibly between high and low spins, by changing the ligand field splitting. Many studies about the SCO have been reported up to now in the field of the six-coordinated octahedral (Oh) metal complexes. In order to expand the availability of the SCO phenomenon, a novel way how to change the ligand field splitting in the cases of not only the Oh but also the four-coordinated metal complexes. In this study we investigate the way how to change the ligand field splitting by distorting the shape of the molecule in the case of a four-coordinated metal complex.
