An asymmetric carbon in organic compound has the optical rotatory ability, and optically active substance shows the circular birefringence. As well known in the field of an organic chemistry, the asymmetric carbon can be represented by both Cahn-Ingold-Prelog (CIP) priority rule and D, L notation. However, there is no relationship between the orbital rotation and these two notations, and the mechanism of the circular birefringence has not been known. The purpose of this study is examining the relationship between the helicity of the electron density on the asymmetric carbon atom and the optical rotation by means of the electronic state calculation, through the discussion of the bond overlap population (BOP).
