The Hayasaki Underwater Site (Naoshima Town, Kagawa Prefecture) was surveyed by divers from the Institute of Underwater Archaeology in 1998, with the report focusing primarily on ceramics (Yoshizaki 2000). In 2023, the authors organized the Hayasaki Underwater Site Survey Team and
➀ Re-examination of the artifacts collected from the water ② Re-examination of the nature of the artifacts and structures present at the underwater site We undertook this survey and analysis with these two points as our objectives.
The scabbards were estimated to date from the late 8th to the late 9th century, while the shipwreck timber was dated to the late 17th and late 18th centuries. The collected pottery was identified as dating from the 11th to 13th centuries, as well as the 18th and 20th centuries. This suggests that the site is a composite archaeological site where older and newer materials are layered over the shipwreck, spanning those time periods. This area of the Seto Inland Sea has a high incidence of maritime accidents, and it is presumed that the formation process of the Hayasaki Underwater Archaeological Site is complex.
