Baseball is one of the most popular sports in Japan; however, the number of male high school baseball players has been steadily declining. In contrast, participation in women’s baseball has been increasing significantly, and Japan’s national team, Madonna Japan, is among the world’s strongest. Despite this, media coverage remains limited, and public awareness is low.
This study aims to examine the current situation and future potential of women’s baseball in Japan. The findings show a remarkable rise in the number of players and teams, along with unique features such as inter-category games and tournaments exclusively for women. Although inequalities persist—such as only the girls’ high school championship final being held at Koshien Stadium—the sport’s status is improving. In addition, hosting baseball clinics and organizing women’s games before professional matches are suggested to promote the sport.
Improving facilities and supportive environments is essential to attract new female players and sustain participation.
