Summary

As is well known, Shigemitsu Dando (1913―2012) was one of the great criminal law scholars and a Supreme Court judge in Japan. As he said in his books, his personality and legal thoughts were made up of various elements : especially important were the people and environment surrounding him in his childhood.  In this paper, I verify that his personality and legal thoughts were strongly influenced by his father and his childhood environment in Okayama.
His roots were in Bitchu-Matsuyama(Takahashi today). His grandfather Zenpei Dando was a disciple of Houkoku Yamada, who was a famous Youmeigaku scholar, and a master of swordsmanship.  His father Yasuo Dando was a prosecutor with a strong sense of justice, who later became a lawyer in Okayama, because of a conflict with the Attorney General in the Siemens corruption scandal.  He (Shigemitsu) inherited his father's sense of justice through observing his father's attitude as a lawyer in his childhood.  Also, his emotional state was created during his childhood in Okayama, which is rich in nature.
Later, when he was involved in the Osaka-Airport case as a Supreme Court judge, he expressed sympathy for the plaintiff residents and his anger at political interference in this trial.  This fact suggests that his emotions and sense of justice that made up his humanity had been strongly influenced by his father and his childhood environment in Okayama.
