Since 2006, we have been exploring teaching methods for art appreciation for four years now at the Elementary School attached to Tottori University. Initially we tried to introduce existing teaching methods available in other schools and museums. However, these methods turned out to be inappropriate for our school situation. Therefore, we decided to develop our own teaching method which would be more suitable for us to employ in our teaching situation with our particular pupils and educational backgrounds.
One of the features which distinguish our educational method is the focus we put on some of the basic components of art such as "line," "color," and "form." Obviously, all these components comprise art appreciation. On the other hand, asking the elementary pupils to appreciate everything involved at one time would lead to inadequate exercise of appreciation of art, without offering any merits for understanding the meanings of works of art. Thus, we decided to deal with these basic art components of "line," "color," and "form" separately and to focus on one element in one lesson hour.
In this paper, we present the lesson with a focus on "line" in particular.
