In August 2024, a four-month-old Japanese Black calf presented with ocular hyperemia and hypothermia and died suddenly. No recent diet changes nor abnormalities in the penmates or other cattle on the farm were observed. However, gross necropsy revealed yellow discoloration, which was evident in the subcutaneous and intermuscular connective tissues, and thoracic and abdominal fluids and serosal surfaces of the abdominal organs. Additionally, enlargement and discoloration of the liver and enlargement of the pancreas with induration of the surrounding adipose tissue were confirmed. Histopathological examination revealed diffuse hepatocellular necrosis and vacuolar degeneration. Focal necrosis of the pancreatic parenchyma was observed with multifocal necrosis within the adipocytes of the interlobular stroma and peripancreatic tissues, whereas the inherent architecture of the remaining pancreatic parenchyma was maintained. Reports of pancreatic diseases in cattle are extremely rare; therefore, further investigation of similar cases is crucial to elucidate the pathogenesis of this condition.
