Total synthesis and absolute stereochemistry of plakortone E.

The absolute stereochem. of plakortone E (I), a cytotoxic metabolite (no data) of the Caribbean sponge Plakortis simplex, was established by the synthesis of the racemic C-8 epimer and then of plakortone E (I) itself, which was identical with the natural compound.
