The purpose of this study is to clarify the nature of media education that guarantees a place for deliberative discussion.
The preamble of the Courses of Study for 2017 states that the purpose of school education is for each student to become “a creator of a sustainable society. As one of the studies for this purpose, the study of social controversial issues based on the methodological principle of deliberation has come to be practiced. However, the current media environment makes it difficult for people with different values to sit down at the same discussion table. In deliberative discussions, people with different opinions are required to discuss with each other in order to change their consciousness and reach a better conclusion. For this purpose, a certain degree of information sharing and tolerance toward heterogeneous others are necessary. However, it is becoming more and more difficult to guarantee these in the current age of personalization of information.
In this study, we first propose a media education method that fosters “social tolerance” and “sharing of issues,” which are the foundations of deliberative democracy.
